Title: No rally for me, but still got some silver.
Post by: Chef Geoff on March 06, 2011, 08:05:39 PM
Well I had to work this lunch time so going to the rally was out for me  :(  ( But I still managed just under 4 hours this afternoon and am quite pleased with the finds. The site is one I was detecting in earnest last year that was meant to be done to death by the local club.

A Vicky farthing 1891 was my first find, so first signal first coin...well pleased.

Then my second 50/50 of the week, this time a sixpence 1944

My second piece of silver for the session was an inlay hallmarked Birmingham 1887

Tafflaff threatened terrible things if I got a hammered today, well it's not quite a hammered...is it? It is a counterfeit groat pre 1504 London mint. unfortunately the obverse has completely corroded away so no knowing from which reign it comes. I almost prefer finding these to the real thing, It's the craftsmanship, intrigue and very real danger it took to produce them.

This little fella was next and I am really pleased with it, it's a button of the Royal Artillery circa 1800.

Val look away now!!!!! This is a monster of a spur rowel, 50mm from point to point, 16-17thC. OUCH! :o

This is my second wrist watch in 4 weeks, my first was a Timex, but this one is Safilo (think Armani, Dolci etc) so I may get it fixed if poss.

Then my third and final silver and the best one (sorry Ray ::)) A Denarius of our old friend Mr Severus ???.

OK you can look back now Val  ;D, I'm sure ive seen or even found one of these before but can't place it, it looks modern(ish) and part of horse tack, but after my last piece of "machinery" turning out to be a 16thC sword hanger I thought I better ask if someone knows it real usage.

Along with a few more buttons, a couple of buckles and coppers' oh and one and half barrel tap keys it was a good afternoons detecting.
I still would of preferred to be at the rally with you lot though.

Hi Geoff
That looks like just the job to make my old nag move on command.
The one you're not sure about looks like a, (not sure of exact name), but it's the bit that hooks onto the swindletree(a pivoting bar attached to the front axel) on a cart or carriage. the leathers loop through the smaller ring and run up along the horse to the collar. There would be 2 of these.
Nice load of finds there, well done, again. ;D

Val
