Title: roman floor reburied
Post by: mickycoin "mick" on March 27, 2009, 11:37:42 AM
hi just wondered when builders e.t.c uncover old buildings, floors etc by misstake while digging out ground work for a new building or similar. is there a law to stop them filling it back in??  and , or just carry on and bury it with new work. i know of one instance were a roman floor was exsposed by a j.c.b. digging out footings for an exstension to a house near lougher s wales, were there was an old roman villa or fort not sure less than 100 meters from it. the extension was cancelled and site refilled, no more was ever said about it" right or wrong"??

Good one , report it and ask to carry on with the extension then you have to stump up the cost of rescue archaeology, carry on and someone notices, big fine , possible prison sentence , fill it back in and forget it, no damage done. If they reported it these may have been the options they were given and probably thought it wasn't worth the cost.

Most builders who have a schedule to keep without incurring penalties would probably bury it on the hush-hush.
Unfortunate, but it`s the world we live in!

I think a lot of builders would keep on with the job , with one eye closed!
