Title: Out with the Swansea Club today
Post by: Debbie on April 17, 2011, 06:24:47 PM
Went to a farm on the Gower with the Swansea Metal Detecting Club today.

Another beautiful day - blue sky and sunshine, and parking in the field where we were detecting.

In the first half hour of everyone switching their detectors on, John, one of the members,  found a nice hammered penny.  Great, I thought - this should be a fabulous day.
Well, after my tenth tube and bits of broken buckles and some buttons, I thought that the one and only nice find of the day had been found  :'(

After lunch, everyone set back to it and we all wandered away from the cars.  After about an hour, Tyna found a cut half.  Here's a photo:

Tyna waved her hand in the general direction of where she found her hammy, and I made my way up and down the area.  I had a cracking signal - so big and loud, I thought it was a can lid !  Imagine my surprise, when, from just a few inches down, out popped this Roman brooch !!

Then, at the end of the day, my brooch was voted "find of the day" - I was well chuffed  :D

Nice going both, love the fibula it's a late 1stC Polden hills type. And well I'm just jealous of the cut half, I was only saying to Rob last week that I haven't found one for about 10 years, I must be doing something wrong :(

Great finds for you both. The short cross cut half is a very interesting one. It's Rhuddlan mint, moneyer Halli. The full legend reads hALLI ON RVLA. These are often found with the legend reversed, which appears to be the case with yours unless you've flipped the image yourself.

And the brooch is very nice too!

Thanks Peter  ;) I did not flip the image - apart from changing the brightness and a small crop, the image is "as is".

What is the year of the coin?

Well done Debbie. One of those equals out a whole load of junk.

And very well done Tyna to find the cut half. That makes up for at least a months worth of junk.

Lovely hammered and the brooch is a cracker.  With the Deus again, one suspects!  ;D

RJM - cut half with the Monsterlab, brooch with the Deus  ;D
To be honest though, the cheapest detector on the market would probably have found the brooch - it sounded like a coke can when I went over it  ;D  ;D

As I, and many people on the forum have said - with a lot of the finds, you just have to go over it with the search head  ;)  I often stand in a field and look around at a vast expanse of land and wonder how on earth I find anything at all - especially when the Deus has one of the smallest search heads on the market (unless, of course, users have gone for the new large coil).  It makes me wonder how much I miss too  :(

In my humble opinion ............. the more expensive machines give the option of "tweaking" the settings for more challenging environments - such as highly mineralised ground, salt on the beach etc. etc., and the electronics are more sophisticated to be able to winkle out a good signal when the object is either next to or under iron.  On pasture, greater depth is an advantage.  In the case of the Deus, the light weight and no cables are an absolute boon.  One of those instances when good things, other than Oxo cubes, come in small packages  :D  Again, the bottom line is - you still have to go over it to find it, regardless of the detector you are using.

Roll on next Monday!
Deb

Seriously - had a fantastic day.  A big thank you for all the effort that Gloria and Dave put into finding rally land for the club.  They are the unsung heroes  :)

Sorry Tyna, but I get a bit enthusiastic when I see something different, particularly in the short cross or voided long cross series.

To put it in perspective though, there are 904 short cross coins on UKDFD. Only 10 are Rhuddlan mint and there are none from this moneyer (Halli).

In the book by JP Mass, English Short Cross Coins 1180-1247, there are 2200 coins illustrated. Only 21 of these are Rhuddlan mint, with 6 from this moneyer and only 2 with this retrograde legend. So pretty scarce IMHO.

Yes, I know I'm an anorak...... ;)

Only playing Pete  ;D. Of course I'm thrilled with the cut half and really do appreciate the trouble you go to in identifying these bits and pieces for us all  :o

Naturally you're an anorak but that's what we love about you  :-* :-* :-*

Glad I don't have to buy your presents Nordine.
Me I'm happy if I get a card these days and a box of chocs is a bonus.
Was looking briefly at the Deus myself last night. Noticed there is a waiting list at Regton. Praps you should put your name down now.
