Post by: Kev on April 24, 2011, 09:30:35 AM
Brothers profit from coin haul

SIX silver coins found in a 100-acre field in Wingham have been declared treasure trove.

They were discovered by metal-detecting enthusiast Danny Larcombe, 25, and his brother
Stephen, 28, between November 2008 and 2009.

Eh ?

Could someone explain that article to me ?

Quote
British Museum national finds adviser Helen Geake told a hearing in Canterbury that some of the coins, including a Saxon penny, a Charles ll half-crown, a Celtic quarter stater, a Roman Republic denarius and a Roman sestertius, dated from the 7th century.

At first I thought they were found together making them someones post  medieval collection, but they were'nt  how can they group that collection as dating from 7th Century?

I'm a bit confused as well Rob, if I take that article literally, that means coins of different era's, even if they are found in the same field, being of precious metal, are now deemed as Treasure? In which case there are probably loads of us then that need to be declaring if that is the case. Have others read this the way I have?

If it's true, then it's just another way forward, for them to get hold of our little finds  >:(
Soon finds from the same County could be deemed 'treasure trove' !  They should get a life   >:( >:( >:(

hi all,
i came across this chat while searching google. im one of the finders of the 'coin haul', six silver sceattas to be precise. i found three and three also fell to my brother stephen. this article was jumbled together by one very confused reporter who wanted a photo of myself and some finds. he was passed my contact details from another reporter who was present at the hearing when the sceattas were declared treasure. he said to me that he wanted to cover the subject of metal detecting in the paper and wanted a pic of me and some finds so i agreed. he went away and the following week his story was published, but all he had done was associated the random items that he photographed to the finding of the six sceattas. idiot! none of the items he photographed were found on the field in question. sorry for any confusion this reporter has caused.  >:(
p.s. pukka site. i always read your articles in the mag and what a fantastic effort you all make, some great finds too.  :)

I did read an article somewhere (think it was in the Searcher Magazine) where they warn you about talking to the press if you do make a considerable find.
