Title: Help needed to ID this object
Post by: wayno on April 28, 2011, 06:59:21 AM
Hi Pete
Can you or anybody shed some light on this object. My first thoughts were some kind of coin weight.

Is it flat or a cube? It could be a gaming piece if its a cube, or a weight if its flat.

Also what does it weigh? If its a recognized weight value, bobs your aunty.

Its a coin weight Wayne - I have a similar one at home. I'll dig out the bag its in and the description when I get home.

If memory serves me the swirling sun symbol at the bottom of the weight had something to do with Portugese escudos.

Nice find
Neil

Nice find Wayno, Like Neil I have a similar one id'd as a 1 Ecu (French) coin weight (unofficial English issue), the pics aren't that clear so I can't see how many circles (anullets) it has, each one represents 1 coin.

I believe it's a 17th century apothecary's weight, similar to this but with a different symbol:
