Definitely king John look at the s on the coin that's what gives it away as a John penny  ;)

Nah, its a Richard 1 penny 1189-1199ad. Spinks type 1348c 4b.

The moneyer was illiterate and couldnt spell his name. it looks like TRVENE O N.LN which is not a known moneyer. It could also be a very poor attempt at steven but several of the letters are misshapen.

Eric the penny IS king John, the moneyer was Stivene who minted coins in London from 1199 to 1204. You need a better book ;)

I checked King John but couldnt find one with a Sceptre on the right and Spink doesnt show Stivene as a moneyer for John. You may be right about the book Geoff.

I'm afraid Spink was developed as a sales catalogue of coins they sell and contains only about an eighth of the actual number of British coins that are out there.

I have noticed that Spink has some glaring omissions and the pictures of the coins are tiny so make comparison really hard.

I have been trying an iphone App that is pretty good but it says this coin is richard 1 so dont hold your breath. The S isnt reversed either so I dont know why some are saying it is.

There is also this picture of a Richard penny that looks exactly like the one we have been arguing about.
