Title: Promising start on new field
Post by: peanut on December 24, 2011, 07:28:03 PM
Managed to get just under the hour on a new field today and was pleased to find a couple of  items that should make it a promising field.
Its on the top of the highest point around and has a 360 degree view .
Its half a mile from 3x Roman villa fields, the Fosse Way  and a castle hill featured on TimeTeam so I'm expecting there should be some Roman presense here .

Its so windy up there that my eyes streamed water the whole time and I could barely see where I was walking.
Its great to be out there walking the fields ,detecting on my own away from everyone on Christmas Eve. ;)

Can anyone ID the badge I wonder ? or suggest a use for the hexagonal lead piece ?

Nice going Peanut, not bad for such a short time. No idea on the lead item I'm afraid, unfortunately lead was a metal that in many cases was fashioned at home due to it's low melting point and so many items are one off's, which means their use is lost in the mists of time.
The badge though dates from between 1918 and 1965 with a great likelihood of being from WWII.

thanks guys. can't wait to get back on there  ;)

Found this on ebay tonight. Apparently its a cap badge of the Royal Army Service Corps a support service and dates from c 1940 so you were spot on.!
