Post by: hedgehog on April 19, 2009, 11:43:49 PM
It can't be for the profit that's for sure, why do we keep doing it?

i enjoy the fresh air and the wildlife you can see when detecting. its amazing how many different animals and birds you can see in one day. Also its nice to go with company and detect with like minded people and meet new friends, and if you do not find anything its nice to see what other people have found.also the interest that builds up in our past history never bothered me when i was in school but now i think i could go back just for the history lessons. ;D ;D ;D

In the early days  of detecting quite a few people who Joined the hobby were under the illusion it  was the road to riches basically thinking now that I,ve the machine all I have to do is go out and find the big one :o  then I can retire etc! ;D ;D when eventually the truth dawned  the myth was soon dispelled today you still get a certain minority or are ELDORADO SEEKERS  ::) but thank god the majority of us are diehard history detectives we are the ones who get the most enjoyment out of this very interesting  hobby not only do we find coins and artefacts from differant time periods and cultures we have the other benefits as well  the scenery/ wildlife fresh air and exercise long may this hobby reign  :)mole

The love of History was instilled in me by my dear old dad God rest his soul,
As i kid i wasnt that interested in treking miles and miles across muddy fields just to keep my dad company my only incentive was a bag of sweets on the way home lol.

I got interested in Detecting Because i was running a pound shop in Mountain Ash and a women Detectorist came into the shop looking for a cheap gloves, we got talking and a few days later she brought in a few copys of the Searcher for me to have a look at.

A week or so later i was walking my Lassie Collie on Ynyshir Mountain when I came across a women detecting on the old parish LLanwonno road.
She turned out to be the wife of the then RARE chairman Tony Maz i was invited to the club but what with work and a young family it took me 10 years to become a member (I dont like to rush things lol)

All in all id say what i like about Detecting is ......you dont have to talk to anyone for hours you can walk away from people you dont like, and of cause the Women lol
Only joking you know i love you guys  !  ;D

all the best Phil Jones

Well, apart from getting plenty of fresh air and the dog getting a day's gently exercise, the thrill for me is to dig up something that hasn't seen the light of day for hundreds or even thousands of years.  I am a tad disappointed though when many of the items come out of the ground in a vastly less than perfect state - if it isn't in Benets' Artefacts, and doens't look like a coin in Spinks, I tend to be gazing around for the nearest hedge!! I know, I know, us women tend to be rather fickle......... :-* Deb

Nice one Phil - on the next rally it will be like a scene from the Pied Piper - nobody using a detector, just everyone behind me with thick gloves on ripping the hedges apart!! :D :D :D

My Interest stems back to when I was a wee snip of a Tafflaff . back in the 90,s......ok 80's.....ok really early 80's. Anyway I was always fascinated by the concept of 'Treasure Hunting'  . Nagged and Nagged my parents for a detector... to no avail. Now at the time my interest in history ran to when I'd last had a packet of sweets so that would calculate to about 30mins BS (30 mins before sweeties) Hated history all the way through school not interested whatsoever, a string of idiot history teachers probably didnt help either mind!

Anyway I find myself a few years ago working and in a position to live out my childhood desire and purchased a detector (that soon to my horror got stolen ..thats another story) Now I did not really get serious with detecting until early this year when I joined DETECTING WALES.COM and did'nt develop a longing to learn history until I started digging up strange items and not being able to put them into any context.

So this deep seated desire to Metal detect was started about 30 years ago by me, fulfilled this year by me, and sustained by Detecting Wales and of course R.A.R.E.

I think the reason for people like us going out searching for artifacts of the past is.....
Because there is something within the grey matter that is not working correctly  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Have you seen the price of scrap lead! What more motivation does one need! Seriously though I want a little bit of history. I enjoy researching a find as much as the original discovery.

Good point Jonola. It is nice to put a story to your finds and try and understand them.
