Title: Detecting Wales (July) Two Day Rally
Post by: Tafflaff (Rob) on May 02, 2009, 10:54:18 PM
Ok guys no you're not seeing things , no tafflaff hasnt been out in the sun too long, yes we've skipped one for the moment , but thats cos its going to take a bit of planning. Below will follow the idea, none of it is cast in stone we're looking for support or some feedback.  We have a couple  farms in mind the area is THE GOWER  in spitting distance of a hitoric site.

*UPDATE* Date for 2 dayer probably July 12th...This is not definate but will give you an idea

All those intending to camp please pm me as those details need to be got asap to book the campsite places

Campsite facilities are as follows:-

Showers
Toilets
Restaurant -Cafe
Right on the beach

Day 1:- Meet at Camp site
Get to farm (not far away)
             Rally.
BBQ, Drink,  Wander onto beach with tectors.
             Overnight Camp

Day 2:-
              2nd farm Rally

PS. We may be having some oversea Visitors.

Some members have expressed an interest in doing some fishing on the beach , no problem guys its your time, I may well join you

As we have discussed Rob this is fine with me.

I would suggest perhaps a weekend during the first 3 weeks of July as it means the kids aren't off school and a lot more could attend, as people ttend to book their holidays when the kids are off - doesn't bother me as I have none!

If we could have another farm for the 2nd day - all well and good. If people want to go beach detecting I think they will just naturally do it anyway. We may find that Day 1 farm is worth 2 days visits especially if we were to limit the fields, and if our theories on the farm are correct - I would keep the location well and truly under your hat for the time being though.

Loved your interview with the ducks by the way and all the other videos - great job mate

cheers
Neil

As you know from me Rob the whole area looks well interesting, but the beach does have that safe landing look about it so could be quite interesting. I would say give people the choice. As you may not know I am due to become a dad again around this time ( bad timing on my part ) so can only provisionally say i will be their. But what a great Idea. Well done Rob.

Hi Rob,Can I say provisionally yes and prefereably the two farms option.Pretty sure James2nd,Earth2 and Jonni will come but will get them to confirm.
Al :) :)

I agree with Neil , avoid the school holidays ( and the traffic ) and 2 farms would be 'tectin' heaven , I just need a tent !

I am up for it. Last week of July and first week of August are out for me cos I am off to the South Coast (Where of course I intend to find a hoard). As an ex-army blokey I am relishing being under canvas again...Have I ever told you all that during the war...

What I will say though Kev is that it cant be peak Summer as it will be too difficult to get on the camp sites , cos school hols and The farmers dont like loads of holes dug on pasture in the hot weather as it dont nit back very good, also the birds rip the clodged back up after worms. The farmer said that himself. :-\

I can't make the 11th July unfortunately Rob as I will be in Crantock, Cornwall. I can do the weekend of the 4th or 18th, but just go with what the majority can do.

Sounds like it will be a cracker of a weekend!

Well done on the organising

Post by: Tafflaff (Rob) on May 26, 2009, 11:49:13 AM
This is what i got so far, and this is not finalised so keep checking.

12th July
Meet at campsite in Llangennith or Oxwich to set up tents

Rally at Farm 1

Back to campsite.

BBQ, I think bring yer own food, that will solve the problem of what to charge.
I,m trying to borrow a big gas bbq  to do everyones food on, We are open to ideas regarding the food situation.

As for drink there is a shop selling all types of drink on campus so you could buy from there bearing in mind it would probably be more expensive. Though there is a few shops and garages between rally farm1 and the campsite that you could get drink from.

ideas ideas ideas guys, come on think!

Drink

Ok as an update , I have priced up camping at a site nearer the 1st rally farm , showers , toilets ect

Price is £6.00 per person, so everyone could take one tent if they wished. We can also book it in advance a week b4 and we will all be on the same pitch area. This site is still only a hundred yards from the beach so happy days! Cockles on the barbie!

Stan I noticed a B&B only a mile from the farm. The venue is by no means finalised yet , but I'm sure there'll be availabilty of B&Bs

Thanks for the B.n B info Rob, By the way, I heard a story on Sunday
that the 2 day rally had been abandoned, due to change of mind by
the farmer. Is there any truth in this? If so, what a bummer.  STAN

Stan - I think it may be a change of venue, rather than abandoned all together.  Tafflaff and the other organisers will keep you posted. :)

Yeah Debbies right fella . We've been having some problem with the venue farms. Now We've got farms across the bridge we can use , but all farms during this time are going to  be pasture only. One idea that we've been kicking around is to hoild the 2 dayer at the begining of September , when the weather is still nice, but we've got a far better chance of stubble fields to detect on.

Feedback on this idea anyone?

Beginning of September is a good idea Rob. I took some annual leave in september last year for that reason , but it rained a lot  :'( :'( but you can't control the weather! Although I am starting to wonder  ;D ;D
Makes more sense to do it then and it is known as the rally season!

Title: Re: Detecting Wales (July) Two Day Rally

is it gonna be ploughed, or stubble?? please dont be pasture, getting fed up that green rubbish

Title: Re: Detecting Wales (July) Two Day Rally
Post by: Tafflaff (Rob) on June 17, 2009, 06:40:25 PM
Romano-Brit, that is the inherent problem with the summer , pasture, pasture and more pasture. Nearly all fields that aint pasture are growing crop. Even a lot of the pasture fields are put to silage, Timing is of the utmost essence.

This is why we are seriously contemplating, waiting until Early September and going for stubble fields. Even freshly ploughed are a pain in the butt.

The downside of this is that its hard to plan as no farmer will tell you he's going to harvest on such n such date . weather dictates when the farmer will harvest.

Add to the above factors, club rallys and other already organised rallys (weekend wanderers 2 dayer end of September) and I'm sure you'll get the picture of the obstacle course we are trying to negotiate.

When it comes closer to the time, whatever land becomes available, whether it be East or West, Wales or England, then I'm afraid we are going to have to  grab it with both hands and take it. I know theres a lot of people out there want it to be West and If we can , we will .but we are governed by a  huge amount of variables and the goalposts keep moving  ;)

Any ideas or thoughts please feel free to add.  Theres no such thing as a bad idea...unless it comes from Kevin  :P  :-*

have to agree with you Rob, there are so many ifs and buts that whenever the opportunity comes we're gonna have to take the plunge. sure pasture isnt always ideal but, for me anyway, it'll be just great to meet up with mates from this site that will be the attraction. East or west just make sure Neil has booked the weather  ;)
he's done a hell of a job in that department so far.
