A lot of iron and bronze age hoards have been found by novice detectorists in recent years presumably because at first novices tend to dig every signal ! ;) I haven't got the inclination or energy to dig everything to be honest or it would ruin my enjoyment so I'll continue to lightly discrim and probably miss the occasional coin or relic :'( Title: Re: Missing Gold By Ignoring Low Value Signals On Meter? by using discrim? On the other hand if you dug every signal you'd get nowhere fast. My thought's on the matter are if the site your detecting has a very long history such as a settlement or battlefield then dig everything. The area I was detecting is an iron ore area. I came to the conclusion quite early that most of the iron signals I was getting were ore and not items. I tested the theory by trying to dig a couple of them. The signals were still there but after digging to the point I was on my knees there was no sign of anything.
Unfortunately that was before I mentioned it to the land owner who told my about the mining. >:( But, yes, I agree with you. This area is littered with Iron and Bronze age remains so I thought the same, dig everything. ::) No Chance. ;D Come to think about it, praps thats why the Ancesters liked the scenery so much.
