Title: Missing Gold By Ignoring Low Value Signals On Meter?
Post by: Spooyt Vane on September 07, 2012, 03:15:51 PM
Out with mate a couple of days ago and he recovered a small American gold coin which was reading  at the bottom of the scale ...28 on my Deus XP...Coke reading usually at this level on my machine...So it pays to dig al non ferrous signals on meter ..No matter how low on meter.... ;D

That seems to be the case with many machines. Worse still that even ferrous signals of the light less detectable are many times that of a small deep find.
Unless you dig every signal you can never be sure.

I'm rapidly coming to the same conclusion myself.

A lot of iron and bronze age hoards have been found by novice detectorists in recent years presumably because at first novices  tend to dig every signal ! ;)

I haven't got the inclination or energy to dig everything to be honest or it would ruin my enjoyment so I'll continue to lightly discrim and probably miss the occasional coin or relic :'(

This is a comment I've made in several discussions I've had with fellow detectorists. How much history are we missing
by using discrim? On the other hand if you dug every signal you'd get nowhere fast.
My thought's on the matter are if the site your detecting has a very long history such as a settlement or battlefield then dig everything.

There is a downside to that theory Mike.  The area I was detecting is an  iron ore area. I came to the conclusion quite early that most of the iron signals I was getting were ore and not items. I tested the theory by trying to dig a couple of them. The signals were still there but after digging to the point I was on my knees there was no sign of anything.
Unfortunately that was before I mentioned it to the land owner who told my about the mining. >:(
But, yes, I agree with you. This area is littered with Iron and Bronze age remains so I thought the same, dig everything. ::)  No Chance. ;D
Come to think about it, praps thats why the Ancesters  liked the scenery so much.
