Title: THE SORT OF THING I DID NOT WANT TO FIND
Post by: glynkid on January 29, 2013, 11:58:21 AM
A few weeks ago I took three friends on an estate that i go on I always contact the gamekeeper to check what part of he land is available On this I have found Roman and hammerred coins
after about an hour of detectin we had mainly coppers..... a token
and a couple of george the fifth silver
I had a signal and out ppopped bullets
On the hill there was a AA gun turret and I knew the Americans where on site during the second world war
The gamekeeper was amused by the find and told us that The field was a flightpath during world war two for german bomers on there way to bomb Liverpool
One of my mates Chris had a good signal and called me over to help recover it we decided to leave it incase it was another larger weapon of war.... the hole was filled in      Some years ago I went on a detecting rally NEAR nantwhich
and someone found a hand grenade..... the area was fenced off and a ring of rope put around the area
THE army disposal team arrived and confirmed It was a dummy grenade used for training purposes
So take  care when detectin on site where a military presence was there in the past

Its amazing how much old ammo is out there, particularly in this area of the country, we have been detecting in an area the SAS train on in the past and they use some very odd sized ammo...  As has been said, the authorities are the proper way to go, but I have to admit that I tend to take them to the nearest hedgerow and re-bury them tight to the base of the hedge, in a spot the farmer is unlikely to ever disturb them  again. I figure its got to be better than where I found them and plod probably wouldn't really like me turning up with them anyway, as they'd have to deal with  problem, and they would really appreciate the paperwork...  Seriously though, Don't take them home with you !
