Title: total beginner- 2nd try- pieces of eight jim lad!
Post by: douglas1 on February 12, 2013, 05:00:41 PM
O.k maybe not pieces of eight, but for a total novice, something akin to it.1St day,1st try out just tinfoil, cans and bottle caps.....2nd day/2nd try out 3 pound coins and 1 50 p pieces found about 6 inches down in wet sand, with a garret 150. Now common opinion seems to be that the garret ace is useless on wet sand, so was I just lucky or did I do something right (probabley without knowing it)?

Hi Douglas, I think when people say that the Ace 125/250 are useless on the wet sand it's comparative. Next to a Minelab Sovereign then they are toys but next to a T2 (which is also useless on the wet) then they are not too bad. Well done on your finds and if you can suffer the falsing on the wet then I'm sure you will do well ;)

Thanks Geoff for your reply......yes several times I had good signals and dug down and around to find .....nothing,not even a bottle top,I guess thats what s meant by falsing? Early days yet,but even now I m  getting addicted methinks.

Is that Douglas who wasn't going to bother and sell his detector when it arrived  ??   ;D ;D

Not bad going for your 2nd trip. You did better than me today. Loads of junk and not a single coin in sight. Oh I did rescue a baby sole. So sweet. I put him in one of the holes I'd dug that had filled up with water. ;D

Glad to hear you're getting to grips with it. Happy Hunting.

Val

Hi Val   yes its the same Douglas ;) after asking a farmer for permission to try on his land, and surprisingly being told yes go ahead(expecting to be told to clear off),it didnt seem such a daunting prospect, though that wont be  till next week.So tried the beach.Glad to hear about the Sole ,hope he/she is doing fine ;).......regards

the problem with the garret ace on wet sand is that it is very unstable,i know peeps who do find gold rings with them but when i had mine i just found loads of coins.inland i found a load of silver sixpences and threepences.they are good machines but not the best for beach work.
good start though, they make a lovely noise when they get pound coins, keep it up.people do lose rings in the dry sand too so keep looking and you will find.
 good luck
   mike

Great going I've had a fair few coins off the beach including wet sand with my Ace 150. Wish I could say the same for the CS4pi which loves finding rusty scrap very deep down  >:( lol.
