Title: "Get off my land" or not ?
Post by: Stig(The) on May 19, 2009, 07:13:11 PM
I`m sure some of you have been knocked back & had a refusal when requesting permission to search someones land as i have.
I was wondering what reasons you`ve been given(if any) for the refussal.
The reason i ask,is i`ve sort permission by asking face to face & had results & refusals but recently started sending "permission letters",due to the distance involved & the lack of time to travel,to farms far & wide,in my search for land for the club etc & just received my first reply.
I quote:
Thank you for your letter.
I would ask that you note i no longer reside at ****** farm & i would therefore suggest that you direct your enquiry to the new owner of the property.
I would also ask you to note that my husband MR ******* has passed away & therefore i would appreciate no further correspondence !
Yours faithfully... Mrs *******
As you can imagine i felt bad after receiving this reply & meant no malice or upset to anyone.
I took the name & address off the net after compiling a list of farms that would be within a reasonable travelling distance.
I am awaiting 14 more replies & am now anticipating what they might be!
So with this in mind i thought it might be an interesting post if other members could post there refusals to search & the reason given

Never had a refusal, but recently moved closer to home. Then I have only approached land owners I know and they have more than enough for me to go at. I have been looking for some rally land for a Detecting Wales Rally and though its early days have even had positive feedback for the future on these. Now I have just gotta find time to get out there.

Spent a lot of time finding out about one particular area and identified that there should be a DMV nearby, spotted it although it was not obvious due to ploughing.
Went down the farm track spotted a guy on a tractor 50's with his son nearby , explained to him what I was doing and asked if I could detect. He said it's not a problem with me, but dad isn't so easy going, I wouldn't bother asking him but come back when the old bugger is dead and you can go on there.  :o

I tried writing letters at one point, but they failed to get me a single farm.  Most of the farmer’s didn’t even bother replying, even though I included self addressed envelopes.  I find the best way to acquire new land to detect on is to knock.  On average 3 out of every 5 farms on say yes.

Yeah Mark,i`ve also included stamped address envelopes with the 14 replies i`m awaiting but i aint holding me breath.
I have had more success asking in person but these farms are miles away & i just aint got the time to visit each one mate.

Best of luck  with the letters,  i tried it once, only on  one,  to a farm i used to go potato picking on as a kid,   i'd heard that there were roman mounds and other signs  on some of his fields
he wrote a nice reply back, and even returned my stamped envelope,  but could't let me on because, of other reasons out of his control   don't know if Cadw had it,
Alan

That is the problem where I live Alan. I have some really interesting farms and know a lot of the land owners. Trouble is it is the Walton Basin and is one of the most important prehistoric sites in Europe. The Roman fort , marching camps, practice camps, vicus, probable temple sites, medieval castles three off, Saxon settlement and countless Iron age farms are all within this area which is protected and under constant archaeological investigation. Pain in the butt as it is over a thousand acres all within five minutes of home.

a bloke i used to go detecting with he once asked for search permission,  the farmer got nasty and yelled at him to get from there  or he'll blast him, he produce a shot gun and pointed at him  lol,
Knowing him though he may have been detecting without permission, still scary though  lol

I only ever phone for permission, never call to the farm. The biggest refusal I have is that they've already got someone detecting regulary. fairs fairs then!

Thats the safe way too Rob,  they can get quite scary some of those farmer,  on the whole though mine have been good,
and you don't know if someone is already going there till you ask,  iv'e had it a couple of times too, but they have been ok about it,

That’s a bit extreme Viking, cant say a farmer has ever been anything but pleasant to me, although I have been present when a farmer started shouting and yelling at another detectorist, who apparently trespassed on his land at some point.  I didn't know the guy, he just turned up on his own.

Well done Millsy mate. It pays to show manners and professionalism. It must all help with the Image that Detecting Wales shows. Anything that Nighthawkers do needs to be redressed and if we all make that extra effort gotta be a big plus.
