Out the other day and found what's in the images.
The puzzle is the half round almost tusk shape bronze item in the middle of one picture
and the small (about a half inch) rolls of lead all found close together along with what could be two palm guards. Although,
these possible guards are very small also.
Any idea's chaps?

Mike the little lead things on the bottom pic, I find but only on one field, and its a few each trip, there must be loads there.
Im sure iv seen more of them posted at some time on here before?

The "two" lead items I would say are just casting waste that's hit the ground, I also find quite a few of the small rolls of lead but like Dale only on certain sites and then in concentrations ???
My guess on the Tusk is that it's the end of a hook..maybe for meat or weighing?

Hello Mike the middle photo reminds me of a find I made some years ago near a cock fighting site could be a spur ??? hope this is of help

Thanks for the replies chaps. Was thinking because of the size and uniformity of the small lead rolls, perhaps they were a currency of sorts.
The area they were found was historically a very poor area and bartering was the usual means of business. Just trying to rationalise these items
being within a few yards of each other.

I knew I'd seen little twists of lead like yours before Mike and it's just come back to me where. Old properties.
I'm sure the electric wiring used to be secured with bits like that. Maybe it's just waste from upgrades that has been dumped and that's why they're found in clusters.

They can be curses, not are. As these seem to turn up in small concentrations It's got me wondering if they were all contained in or on one item when lost such as net weights with the net long rotted away ???

My thoughts was also net weights, mine was found near Thornbury, on the side of a hill, far away from water but a dumped net is possible.

As you said Geoff net weights may be, straight away I thought water, but they could of been used for catching rabbits  ??? as mine was found on the side of a hill.

I don't know how to do a link to the site but I copied what was wrote next to the pic.

There is also some archaeological evidence to suggest that crab nets employed in this area in roman times as a number of strips of lead have been found what are identical to those used today for weighing down nets to catch shallfish    

we used to use lead weights like those on our fishing rods back in the 60's
instead of split shots.

I also found this weighted throw nets for rabbits lol, Im just a little board today im off work with a injury, il stop now

They also use nets when rabbiting with ferrets. They put the ferrets down the hole then cover the entrance with net to stop the rabbits escaping. so I believe. Not sure whether the older nets would have the lead on them though.

The three bits of rolled up lead in pic three, appear to have crimp marks. And may have been used to clamp a flint on a flintlock musket or pistol. I have found a number of these, and they look to be the right size.
