Title: Boarders.
Post by: celticspikey on October 26, 2013, 05:19:13 PM
This week I managed to get two more visits back on the boarders, see previous post, this is a predominantly late roman site and produces many coins with a few artefacts, but hardly any brooches!! My late friend Barry, sadly no longer with us held the record for most coins in a visit 16 in all with his trusty Laser B1. My record was 14 which I was more than happy with, that was until my last two visits with the Deus and as can be seen 1st visit produced 33 coins and 2nd visit 26, plus a nice ring with the stone intact depicting a small matchstick type man!  And a very nice coin showing signs of silver wash.

Nice finds Paul ! A few things iv noticed is the size off the pottery you are finding, its fairly large, the largest pottery I find on my roman site is about the size of a 10p with all rounded edges yours look to be newer brakes, just showing my site has been turned/worked a fair bit more than yours. also the condition off your coins is a lot better than mine, im lucky to find one with a picture on it, usually all the patina is gone from the lime and god knows what else gets put on the land, or its plough damaged....so it makes your site better still ;)

Nice finds - that's a good site - and as Dale has said if you are getting pieces of pottery that big, they haven't moved far from where they were dropped.

Earliest coin I could see was ~270AD, latest (from a quick look) was ~370AD, with your 'nice' coin being of Magnetius - it's unusual to find one of his with any silvering on it, although they should have.

To be honest Dale this field normally has abundant pottery, however this turn of the plough has buried a lot of the smaller stuff , I also find a fair amount of coins that has suffered the consequences of plough damage and fertilizers etc., fortunately not on this particular field ;D

Cheers probono, yes you are both correct most of the pot and finds are confined to a small area of the field ;) and not moved around a great deal, the Magnetius is a nice coin and well pleased with it ;) ;)
