Title: The South wind doth blow and
Post by: handyman [Alan} on October 27, 2013, 05:54:11 PM
Me and techony ventured out today and tackled a recently harvested potato field. Despite the very strong winds and blustery showers, we came home with hoards of spuds, and in between the picking, we managed a spot of detecting and the only coin of note, was a little beauty of Henry 3rd.

if anyone can provide anymore info on the coin, feel free to do so

cheers

Here's little Henry, straight after you disinterred him, outnumbered by the King Edwards...

I must thank a good friend of mine [also called Alan], on the britishmetal detecting website, for taking time to explain to me how the "Randulf on Ive" that the doc correctly identified, appears on the coinage.

i share it with you as its useful to see how others expert in reading the script can make sense of it.

Cheers

To help you id this sort of penny same for Saxon, always look out for the word (ON) first in the legend which means (of) then work back for the moneyers name, and forward for the mint name..... so as the doc has already pointed out.
Randulf of ilchester

Just a little tip what may come in handy one day :)

Not sure about this, but aren't the Ilchester mints ones more scarce?
