Title: Future Detecting Wales Rallies - Where do you want to go ?
Post by: Tafflaff (Rob) on February 02, 2014, 10:17:30 PM
Guys, If anyone has any ideas or would like to try a certain area for a rally - Nows your chance to speak.

I will be phoning farms much of tomorrow and if you'd like me to try for some land in a particular area I will.

Sensible requests only please. The tower of London, Stonehenge or 'The place that guy found all that Saxon stuff' aren't sensible :)

like geoff said pendoylan area ,when i worked for BOSCH in llantrisant about a mile or so from pendoylan ,there are restricted areas inside the bosch grounds and still the remains of an old motte and bailey ,attatched is a picture of the surrounding farms and a picture of the motte and bailey
http://www.gatehouse-gazetteer.info/Welshsites/393.html (http://www.gatehouse-gazetteer.info/Welshsites/393.html)
but i would go to a rally wherever you can get one taff , i know how hard you work to find them cheers mate

Rob, I know it's probably a remote possibility but IF S/West Wales were considered I could put you onto a couple of Farms where I know the owners are very open minded about metal detecting.
One, in particular, is quite large and he and his brother have recently bought another Farm close to Carew Castle.

Just a thought but I realise most would not want to travel that sort of distance any more than I do to the Rallies over the bridge.

Val

I'm assuming you say this in jest as social network/forum evidence is as damning as any other kind of evidence. And that statement does nothing other than to show this hobby in a terrible light.

Well said Rob .... besides if galoshers knows of this illegal activity and does nothing about it, then its very clear he is condoning such activity and i seriously wonder whether he should be allowed to continue on this forum.

I'd love some more rallies in South Wales, even though I know they are likely to be quieter.

Just over the bridge into Saesneg territory is good too - it's not that far really.

And like some of the others, the Brecon area (there's a new fort mentioned in Current Archaeology, found because of a cluster of Claudian coin finds) - and also between Brecon and Crickhowell, plenty of roman and medieval stuff there.

Mid or West wales would be nice - the main reasons I don't get to many rallies is the distance as I live right on the west coast :)

I don't attend rallys as im of the opinion that finds are the same where ever you go,its only the quantity that differs and can never be counted on,but I understand rallys play a big part in a social aspect ,, me I aint very social  ;D

Kenchester Roman Town as a SAM is a no go area but the surrounding fields are not and detecting has been going on in these fields as long ago as when I was in the RAF at Credenhill in the 1980,s. Still regularly see detectorists out there presumably with the landowners permission accept the National trust land at The Weir.

most farms surrounding kenchester have stipulations in  there {whatever council paper work they need} that metal detecting is verborten around kenchester,,so yes the land is off limits by the councils point of view  not a archie view  but I soppose some farmers will turn a blind eye if it may lead to riches ::),,but I wouldent fancy being caught by a council official round there, don't think the farmer would be to happy neither,,,,,,and yes rallys are good if you are having problems to get land.,

Hello all. Interested to read the part of Hereford banning detecting in areas. Can any one advise me how much of an area. I am new to this and have distant relatives on the Welsh/Hereford border that I was going to see but do not want to if it is not legal as due to their age now - they probably do not know either. Regards Viv.

I wouldent worry to much viv the land around kenchester {which is a roman town site}  does not permit meta detecting for obvious reasons ,,I think there is a couple more places in Herefordshire where detectin is not permitted but not many,, so unless your relatives have a roman shrine, town etc on there land I wouldent worry,, I live in Herefordshire 5 miles from welsh border and have detected the area for many years now with no problems.

Councils have no power to ban detecting on any land that they don't either own or are custodians of and any farms that have a council ban are rented by tenant farmers from the council.
All SAM's in England are listed on Magic Map so you can check to make sure no laws are being broken.

Many thanks for the replies.
Relief -  as I thought it was going to be more uphill than expected.
The area is where my family church is and I went to junior school for a few years while growing up.
There is a castle in the valley but the land is not adjoining - nor to the church.
Thought it may be worth a try and my young grandson is interested so perhaps he could cut his teeth here at the same time as me.  He can prop me up as I was aching after the Ross rally - not used to it now.
Long time since I dug a garden - in one day.  Regards Viv.

my mate is not a desperado he has a multi million pound business so is not desperate for cash or finds so i suspect he is not breaking the law with the farmer who he does business with
