All Metal,  Sensitivity about 16-18,  Threshold so you can just hear it, remember to balance every now and then and away you go.

Best not do anything too fancy to start, get used to the signals and then start playing with settings.

Val I think we realy need to talk :D :D the Safari as an FBS machine hasn't got ground balance, if you mean noise cancel unless your somewhere that EMI might change you shouldn't need to NC more than once ;)

Yes I did mean NOISE CANCEL .I'm only repeating what Andy Sabisch advises Geoff.   He recommends doing it as you move around as the ground conditions differ and also after you change from one setting to another.  Also I find it useful on mineralised ground as there does seem to be a build up of false signals and chatter. Then it does work, things settle down again for a while. But maybe that's just some of my very bad fields. Lord forbid everyone has them as bad as that.

I think Andy is covering all bases there Val, yes if you have pylons in the field then your noise channel can change a few times depending on how close you get but if in open country or the beach then once should suffice remember he is essentially writing for the US market where detecting parks, schools and even gardens is commonplace and they are built up areas with many sources of EMI.
He may be coming over later this year and spending some time with me and if he does I'll see if I can drag him along to a DW rally and you can ask him yourself ;)

Hey, now wouldn't that be something. ;)  Mind you he might be glad to get back to the States after running into me. I do agree with you about him writing for the U.S. though.  There is a section towards   the back where he gives the settings for his 'GOLD Program'  Not a lot of use in this country eh. ???

That would certainly be one Rally I'd have to hire a driver for. ;)

start off in ferrous tones run in all metal with just -10 taken out listen for high and mid tones (low tones iron) sensitivity around 15 or until it stops falsing, trash high, threshold 9 with headphones. dig all positive signals. And most important of all have fun ;)

First of all i'm not questioning anyone's experience with the safari!! :)

Just received my safari, well chuffed with tones, but i put my little silver hammered coins in my test pit and some was reading at -10 quite a low tone and copper was coming in at high tone don't know if this different with compacted soil around them!, it,s just i don't want to discrim -10 if i may go over a hammered.  ???

Alternatively there may have been a piece of iron already in there when you planted the coin. The safari will see the largest and strongest signal first.  If you go over it VERY slow you may hear a slight change in tone. What I'd call an 'iffy' signal. These are always a must for digging. 
Also you could try using the 'Coin & Jewellery' setting, which automatically discs out  -10 and see what happens.  Remember, though, the sound of the signal will be low not high.

While your getting used to it basically dig all low tones, that's where your small hammereds are and also your Roman grots forget the numbers they are just there to give you an excuse why not to dig ;D
