Title: Intersting field
Post by: Dale on April 04, 2014, 09:38:47 PM
I had a couple of hours out detecting hoping for a Celtic coin, but it wasn't to be :D in stead I managed 4 grots and a cut quarter what I didn't really expect..........

My detecting style has been a little lazy lately with my discrimination set to high (just below foil) to stop the chirping ::) but knocking the disc back to iron this evening made a big difference on the small targets, I remember the last quarter I found was a bit of a struggle with the disc high, but this one was found with ease ( I should know better SILLY man :D)

Dale,

Good score on the keepers.... as tough as it can be on the ears.....zero disc is probably the best option if you're going after the smaller stuff as well as gold.

Chef I had a hour on the stone area again, it was hard going nothing was coming out, I went to all metal and there is a few nails in the area but they look more modern, but im sure they are all over the field.
One thing did come to light off the stone, but I haven't a clue what its from? the rounded end would of had sides/faces like a diamond, but the photo is not showing very well......It looks to be old but what era I don't know.......... ;)

It looks a bit like a part of a roman trumpet broach like the one I found(http://)

No definitely not a trumpet brooch but good shout John, it's going to drive me mad as I'm sure I've seen one before I've just got to remember where ???

That looks interesting Dale. Nice patina on it. Is that a button next to the cut quarter ?

Hi Val,

Im glad you spotted that, I forgot about that one.

The field I started to detect once had two stone coffins, there now long gone the stone was reused and ploughed out, they were found in 1750 and thought to be Ironage, so I thought I had a good chance of a nice Celtic unit... ::)

I actually thought I found a unit being the item you questioned, going back to the car to look under light I noticed it wasn't a silver unit....... :-\
Iv placed it next to a silver Dubunni unit just to show the colour and texture of the metal, it looks like debased silver to me.........is it a button? silver? I don't know :)

Same area Geoff :D

I'm sure you know, but your quarter is a class 5 (or 5b) Miles at either Oxford or Winchester (shortcross). Nice one.

Not sure about the button thing - definitely looks coin-like on one side, but it looks as if it has had a shank on the other.

Cheers Probono, I haven't id it to be honest LOL, I could see (MIL) and that it was a  shortcross so I knew it wasn't a Bristol and never bothered to check it out::)

Im not sure about the button thing either, as you say it looks to of had a shank at one point ;)
