Yes Mark. Periodically that discussion comes up.  It's frightening to think about but on the other hand, the sort of fields most of us have, it would be an impossibility to dig all Iron signals.
Some time ago, knowing I was in fields with Iron Age features I thought O.K. today I'm going to dig every signal, whatever it is.  I couldn't stand strait for days after.  And what did I find ???   Zilch. ::)

Same applies to the item I'm asking for help with at the moment. If I'd thought when it came up that it MIGHT be a pommel I'd have dug around the find spot for anything Iron, just in case. Who knows what I might have missed.

Interesting that you handed them in to Mark - and he recorded them.

He asked me some time if I look for only non-ferrous items - to be honest, most of the time I do, although I did find a lovely geological type all iron hammer (which had been well used) some time back.

I'm sure, like most people here, the ferrous items turn into hedge fodder / sent to landfill!

Perhaps I shouldn't be so hasty, but I've got loads of roman nails already....... :)
