Title: World heritage site , Big Pit, what a great place to visit!!
Post by: hedgehog on June 04, 2009, 07:23:57 PM
You never would have convinced me that a coal mine (it's not just that, it's much more) would be an amazing place to visit.
I spent 5 hours there and it was nowhere near enough time and entrance is free.
If you haven't been there , go, you won't regret it, it's a credit to wales and mining history and so are the miners that are the guides.
Just make sure you get there early to see everything.

I've been loads of times with the school and never tire of it. The ex-miners that work there really get the kids thinking about what it would have been like for them to work there at their age.
And theres a cache under the dram on the hill ;D

I went there with the school , found it interesting , although felt rather uneasy underground.

I am ashamed to say that even thouh it is very near to me I've never been underground at Big Pit. My grandfather worked there and my grandfathers two brothers were in an accident at British Top Pit which was nearby. David Marshall Horlor, my fathers uncle was killed there.

I have seen the "Above Ground" exhibits and outbuildings as I worked repairing the roofing on the site at one stage. Incidentally, the Welsh  slate tiles were brought down from a disused church in North Wales to retain authenticity.
