Title: My very first day detecting........
Post by: Philip764 on January 23, 2016, 06:41:01 PM
Today was the first day I have ever been detecting so, pleasantly surprised with my little bundle of finds.  Pretty obviously the first one is a knife and the middle two items are buttons, they both appear to have patterns on them but, yet to start cleaning them.  The item on the right appears to be a small brooch but, stuck on the spindle type object on the left ?  All items found at roughly 20cm depth and all within about a 20m area.

Well done Philip a great start your "spindle type object" has more than a passing resemblance to a Roman stylus :-\

I've just Googled 'Roman Stylus' and checked the images........ very similar indeed, also the knife does have quite a thick blade so, a fishknife is what it could well be, thanks for the posts guys :-)

It does a bit, but I think I can see a screw thread on the left hand side of it, which would probably suggest something later.

Ok, so just spent ages gently cleaning up the larger button, was convinced I could see Roman / Latin on the back......LOL, turns out it says 'Extra Standard' ........ mmmmmmmm........ I'll keep you updated with the other bits..... maybe they are all younger than me ? :-) The 'stylus' / 'spindle' object is not threaded in a screwy sort of way .... they are individual threads that do not join up as a screw thread in the usual sense....... again, once cleaned up, i'll update ;-)

OK enough of the cleaning already :D Don't ever clean what you suspect are historical ie Roman objects well not with anything more aggressive than a soft dry tooth brush :-\
Buttons like those and what we recognise as buttons have only been around for 350 years so no danger of finding a Roman one ;)

Well done on your first session, and if that is a Roman stylus, very well found indeed.

Well done on your outing and nice finds, as already advised only gentle cleaning or you'll wreck them
