Title: A couple of hours in the Sun Post by: probono on November 16, 2016, 11:10:41 AM Well, in the light of asking for more finds on the forum (and I was going to post it earlier, but work got in the way!) here are some finds I had from Sunday.
I've been to this field a number of times over the last 8 years or so and usually get something roman off it - three weeks ago had a nice Crispus (might post this below as well) - and decided to look in another area of the field, finding three 17th century milled coppers and a gun flint. So this time, only had a quick search in the roman area (did find a roman, which I haven't identified yet) and then on to the newer area. I'd only said to some people the previous Wednesday that I'd never found any early milled silver on the farm, or had ever found an early milled shilling, so imagine my surprise when out pops a William sixpence, and then a bit later a William Shilling (which had one edge poking out of the ground!). Also had the nice W & M halfpenny. There must be more if I found that lot in 2 1/2 hours, and to top it all I've got until May before the field is getting planted again :D For those coin people out there, the William shilling has a very obvious mint error - it has been struck, then rotated 45 degrees (and shifted) and struck again. Haven't seen one with such a massive die shift before, but there are some online if you look. Have attached the photos of the Crispus from the trip before too. Plenty more on those fields, well done.

I had a bad year detecting last year, however I'm pleased with what I am finding this year - I waited for two years to get back to this field and it has already been worth the wait for me.
