Title: Out with #Roman Ray and Pipster , Roman fibula and Silver
Post by: Tafflaff (Rob) on June 10, 2010, 08:59:42 PM
Out to Hereford today and thankd goodness the ground is more moist.  I managed to  get a Roman fibula quite soon in the day which is great for my farm as little Roman has come off there.  Several coins including my best George i ever , a sweet Vicky 6D , Unusual buck  and a sliver artifact , though what it is I dont know , any ideas?

I'll let the boys post their finds.

Love the little fibula Rob - could be a head stud. You know where the "In the Soil" shot needs to be posted as well mate! ;)

The buckle is missing its paste stones and could either be a Visica shaped Knee Buckle circa 172O-179O or could be a brooch. Is the frame drilled at either end - in which case it is a knee buckle - see Ross Whiteheads book.

Thats a beauty of a Gorge 1st mate and the silver embossed item I would guess at either a pendent or a scribe - is the bottom bit lead?

Pipster - I understand you had another deep milk jug - very bizzare that - a case for the 55 crew  I think!

Great finds mate from the fields that keep on giving.

Neil

Great finds Rob. Love the George I.

I think the buckle-like thing is more likely a belt slide of some sort. As Neil said, would have had paste stones in the recesses. Georgian or Victorian?

I was going to say pendant also for the silver-mounted item. What is the pointy bit made of - is it metal or stone of some sort? And is there an identifiable hallmark?

Peter , Now you've said Stone I think it is fella , It was perplexing me as to what the pointy bit was made of as it felt too light for bronze ot lead and its non ferrous , magnet does not cling to it.  I thought the mark said 97 c , can anyone make it out from the 1st pic??

Neil there are no hole either end of the buckle/slide. The only holes are in the cross piece as per the pic.

Some nice finds there Guys!!

Since you mentioned that the hexagon shaped part of the pendant is perhaps stone, then I would guess that the stone is perhaps a semi precious stone, as it reminds me of the crystals you often see in shops selling crystals, the most common of course is quartz crystals. And this idea could make sense as people do use them for healing and luck etc, so would make perfect sense to turn it into a pendant, if this is indeed what the artifacts purpose was!?

Does the stone not clean better in any way, or is that it's natural colour??

Nice going Taff, That site is deffinately frienly to you, only sorry I couldn't make it.
As John has said that silver mounted item is a "New Age" pendelum. Glastonbury is full of them :D
Fairly modern I would think as you would buy them in the same shop you would buy your copy of Dan Brown or some other Templar prophecy rubish.
