Title: Found a hammy but nearly lost my fingers.....cold!!!!
Post by: Chef Geoff on November 29, 2010, 04:58:26 PM
Decided to brave the elements and get out for what is becoming my usual Monday session. With four layers on I resembled the Michelin man but I was warm and they were all needed today.
After trying one of the stubble fields I found the surface just too frozen and very hard work, so I packed up and headed for the Pasture field next to my Roman site. This proved much softer to dig and with my first signal I was rewarded with an early jetton, not sure which type and hopefully If The Doc looks in on this thread he may have some idea. Unfortunately one side has no surface left and is bent at 90* with only half of the writing left on the other.
I'm not sure if the cold ground helped with the conductivity of some finds but it was definitely a lead day, digging 24 pieces in total.
My other finds included a strap end still with it's fixing pins, a George III halfpenny, William III farthing and 1p.
After three and a half hours my fingers were now beginning to sting with the cold so I decided to make my way back to the gate, taking a slight detour over the part of the field where I have found some small Roman bronzes recently. No Romans today but at the 11th hour out popped a nice Lizzy I threepence, 1569.
Very cold but very happy and it keeps up my 6 week run of 1 hammy a week.

Well done that man. I take off 1 of my hats  to you  for your courage. Well rewarded with some nice finds, even for a nice Summers day.

I answered a call for help this morning. My neighbour, a Farm Contractor, wanted to find an old water stop-cock on his yard. Hey what a joke. My 'tector nearly had a nervous break down. ??? I disconected the ear phones so he could hear for himself how badly contaminated his yard is.
It was deceided in the end to do an Archie type trench to find the pipe so he could follow it along to the end. He was very interested in how the 'tector worked so I showed him how I could discriminate the iron out and left him with a good signal to dig at his leisure. I didn't volunteer myself, the ground is hard cored and rock hard. Hope he finds something nice. :o

Well done Geoff!! I really don't know how you could stand being out there for so long. I cycled to work this morning and it was -7C, being in that for half an hour was bad enough!! Well deserved I must say!! I really want to go out but it's just to cold for me, at the moment anyhow!! Cheers, Jon

I've got my layers ready for another polar expedition tomorrow, it's only meant to be -1*c positively balmy :-\.
Going to try and break my personal record of 4 hammies in a week, fat chance, but...I can but try.

Geoff I don't think 4 layers will be enough. it might be 'less cold' but the wind is going to be a killer tommorrow. Take care. What would we do without you. :o ??? ::) ;D

Brave man Chef. It has not got above freezing here for about a week now and we have 3-4 inches of snow so no chance. The wind makes it feel even colder and to top it off I have a heavy cold. A nice warm wood burner and a mug of tea and FIFA 11 until the weather improves and Casa Kev I have beaten Liverpool 4-1 in a friendly today, that won,t happen to often. LOL  ;D ;D ;D
