Well done Morley, that's a brilliant haul. I only got two old pennies a sixpence and 27p in decmal, oh and 12 musket balls, plus bullets, bullets and more bullets
Done a bit of reading, weighing and measuring and the musket balls seem to be from cannister shot, 78 of them packed into a cannon and fired like a shot gun....ouch!
The tell tale sign is that some of them still have a casting sprue, which you wouldn't have if they were for a musket and there are small flattened areas on more than two sides on some of them, this is were they have hit against each other when fired. Not finished researching yet but with them being made of lead rather than the later iron, tends to date them pre 1880.
The thing that doesn't quite fit is that they are or were quite close, relatively, and really should be much wider apart, so whether this means that they were actually aimed down towards the beach, this is one way they were employed as on normal ground this would widen the killing area as they would bounce up at a wider angle.

Looking at all your finds it makes me wonder as to who the hell said that the Garrett Ace was no good on wet sand Grin

Is this the type of gun that fired the shot?

I think the case shot could be from any calibre of cannon but yes that one is of the right era. Does the two ends of the belt look as if they match?
