Been out twice this week for about 4 hours in total, not much light to do much detecting. Anyhow, I've been having a fabulous time, and today, at the end, I came away with an amazing find, one I truly wouldn't have thought of finding, and that's because it's not metallic, it's a bone artifact, and a whistle too, it is absolutely stunning. At first I thought it was a piece of root, and as you can see by my photo, you can see why, its only the decoration that gave it away straight away. I'm thrilled to bits with it. I also have been finding loads of Roman pottery shards, and came across my first piece of Samian Ware, going to see if I can find more when it is dry. Also came across a Farthing Token today, dated 1664 for Robert Warmall in Welles (Wells), very good condition too. And a lovely buckle with pin, think that's 1600 odd. All in all some great Xmas presents for myself Smiley Seasons Greetings everyone!

Love the whistle Jon - a stunning find. Be careful it doesn't dry out and crack - that happened with a Boars Tusk I once found.

I'd pop it to a FLO for a how to keep it from splitting visit.

Absolutely love it.

Thanks for the comments guys! Thanks for telling me about keeping it from splitting Neil! I have put it inside a finds bag and sealed it, and the soil all the way through the centre is still damp, so that will keep it OK till I can get it looked at. Thanks again.

Looks like a piece of skrimshaw John. If it is then you're a lucky B for finding it.
Sailers used to carve Whale bone and Sharks teeth in thier spare time, very popular in the 1800's through to the early 1900's. Very collectable. Wink

Fingers crossed.
