Some stunning photos from the past year courtesy of the New York Times.

Granted it has an American perspective, but still some amazing images.

Watch them in Full screen to truly appreciate them.

Lets hope we have a more peaceful 2012!

I'll be interested as to what ysbytymike thinks of them, as he has worked professionally with digital and whether that has a bearing on quality.
For me there are only about 4 or 5 shots there that I would say showed any great photo-journalistic talent given the opportunities that were there. The use of depth of field in many is to say the least, poor, either they haven't isolated their subject enough or have used a narrow depth of field when a wider one would of given more impact to the photograph.
I wonder if the use of a unrestricted recording medium rather than a limited roll of film and the variability of zoom lenses over fixed, is taking some of the observation skills and pre thought out of photo-journalism.
I know that on a quality footing, currently digital still can't hold a candle to traditional film stock even in it's most advanced research stages and maybe that has something to do with it.
I'll be interested to see what The Independents take on the year in pictures will be like.
