It must be a Somerset thing as I find them on an annual basis too but we did have more than our fare share of civil war scraps down this way it certainly wasn't the healthiest place to live in those days Wink

So true Geoff, most of the land I search is covered within part of the Monmouth Rebellion.

"The English feared a return to the oppressive Catholic regime of 'Bloody' Queen Mary. Monmouth tried his luck by invading the country at Lyme Regis in June 1685 with only 82 followers. Monmouth had some initial success, and by the time he reached Taunton had amassed around 6,000men."

I am assuming I found two on the same day looking at this photograph?

I'm more inclined to put most of them down to the civil war as Taunton changed hands 4 times and Bridgwater was also besieged which must have seen a great many skirmishes in the area.

It is documented that a large house adjacent to one the farms I detect on was part of the HQ for Monmouth, this house is within a mile of Taunton.

Another one I have found in my photo file.

Umm there are a few of those around but the reality is he wasn't anywhere long, he landed on the 11th of June and only 35 days later he had been tried and executed.
