Well, I have never been detecting before but, always had the thought I'd enjoy it ......... but, it is my birthday and my missus has just given me a Garrett Euro Ace.......... happy bunny :-)

And here is my first beginners question.......lol.  There is a plastic cover for the search coil but, no mention of it in the 'parts' section........ should it be clipped on or is it for storage protection ? Please don't laugh...... ;-)

No matter how silly you think the question, some one has asked it before.

It is a coil cover  and most coils have them. It's to protect the coil when you're swinging it and should be in place at all times.
However, you should take it off fairly regular, give it and the coil a wash, dry them and re-assemble.
Dirt and especially sand works it's way between the two and can affect the signal.
Don't worry about asking, that's how we've all learned.

Hi Philip,
                you now possess a great little detector and I can pretty well guarantee that you will make plenty of finds with the EuroAce. I can't guarantee any treasure though! Take care when changing the batteries in the EuroAce. Lining up the sliders on the battery box cover can be a little tricky sometimes, so don't force the cover into place.

                I have found that the EuroAce performs really well on pasture, ploughed land, and dry beach sand. Upon moving onto wet beach sand you will need to adjust the setting slightly to cope with the salinity of the beach but some report being able obtain 6" depth with the machine on a wet beach. Despite having upgraded to a MineLab Safari, I have kept my EuroAce and two additional coils as backup, in case I am ever without my Safari.

Many thanks for your input, I've been out in my garden (with protector on.....lol) for a bit of practise, still a little baffled by the noises but, have been playing the instructional DVD and going through the handbook so, will hopefully 'get it' sooner rather than later !

It takes a while to get used to any machine, not least the EuroAce. Plenty of EuroAce videos on "youtube" though.

Phillip I've been detecting for 8 years now and I'm still learning so don't worry just ask some one on the site and they will allways help you take your time and swing low mate u will soon get to know about the tones take it easy

Hi Phillip, as has been previously said,take it slowly,and keep your coil low
Try and keep the coil at the same height from the ground during the "swing"
(Unlike a pendulum)
Why not bury a few different coin types at different depths, also a "beloved" ringpull, ATC on your lawn /garden,detect over them,and try to remember the different sounds,don't try and detect on non standard settings,stick to the factory pre-set programme's, keep it simple.
I started out detecting on a Garrett ACE 250,its a great machine,and yes,I found hammered coins with it.
