Author Topic: Techie question- Does the coil cover have a shield effect?  (Read 2677 times)

My coil cover had been wearing thin on the sides and eventually fell off, was going to bring it home to repair it and totally forgot so it is still on the field many miles away.
I bought a new one and when I went out to the one field noticed straight away that there was a big reduction in electrical interference, so I was wondering if the coil cover would have a postiive effect in this way.
Any thoughts?

Steve is it possible that mineralised soil was getting trapped between your old cover and the coil causing electrical interefence?
Did you notice any signal improvement when the cover dropped off?
I bet that before fitting the new cover you cleaned the coil and thus removed any soil etc which could have been causing a problem.

It happens quite a bit if you detect in sand,if you don't remove the coil cover it also can damage the coil as it acts like sandpaper.

Totally agree with the above posts what happens is you are trying to ground balance
on the site you are detecting on but as you have residue left from your last site/beach
etc, inside the coil cover you then have two diff.types of ground you are trying to balance
at the same time hence the falseing you tend to get.
The answer has already been given remove coil cover and remove residue after each trip out and should be fine.
I do strongly reccomend you continue to use coil cover as its a damn site cheaper to
replace coil cover than a new coil because they will wear away without this protection.

i posted this tip some time ago......before you remove the cover soak it in warm water first......sometimes they break as they are taken off...the warm water makes them flexible long enough to remove safely

I take mine off quite regular and its quite surpising how much rubbish get under there. They're awful to get off on the dfx though, end up prising it off with a kitchen knife  Shocked

Don't know if it is just down to soil in the coil cover Steve, when i first bought the T2 it came with out the cover,so i started using it with out a cover, when i then bought and fitted the coil cover  i thought there was a difference in performance and i don't think its purley down to dirt inside the cover ?.
