I`m a local who doesn`t know his own area.

Out for a walk this morning with my camera,and stopped to chat to another gent with this camera.Anyway he began telling things about the council field we were standing in.Right under our feet was the remains of a flat tier going across the hill,turns out this is the site of a croquet lawn that belongs the old house that was in the trees just behind us.He knew the house was there in 1868 but may have been there before that.I was amazed having walked that area for years,I never knew it was there.The gent,in his sixties, told me all about someone he knew who found a pile of gold sovereigns with his metal detector years and years ago.I didn`t even mention I was into detecting!

Also a friend of mine lent me a book about Silures in south Wales,turns out theres  a site of a Silurian/Roman villa on a farm about ten minutes drive from where I live.Something else I never knew.

It's always worthwhile looking into the history of your locality. There is a wealth of information in local libraries and on the internet. Historical societies, old maps, newspapers and the locals themselves. Apart from spending hours in pleasant research, you never know what you could discover and put to use one day. Well done Merlin, sounds like a great place to live.

It was just one of those things I didn`t know about.I have read up loads on my local area.I went back today to have a look at the remains of the old house in the trees.The place is littered with broken bits of china and glass.Picked up a milk bottle from what is probaly 30`s or 40`s.Should be a good place to go bottle digging.
