Mike, if these are for your Quattro, be careful, as not all cans work with Minelabs, they wire them for mono using the center and second pin only on a stereo jack plug and are fussy with the Ohm rating,
Save up for some of Chefs, i borrowed a pair, they are the dogs bits, I don't use them as i use wireless normally, unless it rains, but if i did(use wired that is), I'd buy a pair of Geoff's mate

Steve bought some from Maz in the RARE club and he loves them you are welcome to try them before you buy any if you want to come to our house and try them bring your detector with you the only thing is we live in aberdare? But if you are ever up this way you are welcome to call in and try them.

that is a very good point karl some headphones dont work with the minelab i have used a few pairs of koss good headphones but find them a bit to basey so when it come to the lower tones its hard to tell them apart i have been told that chefs phones are based on koss the same speakers  Undecided how old mate digga won a set of chefs on the forum and he said they were basey like koss so i dont know i do like the look of them they are nice looking phones  Smiley there are some good headphones out there i got to get a new pair next year i might give maz a go yet  Wink

Hi Phil
There are now 3 models of Chef-Phones, all 3 have been tested on a wide range of popular detector makes and models to ensure they work to a very high level.
The original Chef-Phones are as you say based on the same audio signature as the Koss UR30 which does have an extended bass response. This feature has been the reason for their popularity with Explorer/Etrac users as the majority use their machines with the "conductivity" setting. With Conduct you require the greater Bass response to actually heighten the difference between the different bass signals (exactly opposite to the problem you have had with them).

The Super Lights are a more all round headphone, with good medium to high range tones. This feature is excellent when using either ferrous tones with the above machines or any of what I would call the treasure tone machines ie. Xterra, XP etc. the speakers were developed for voice tones by ground crew and so the tones are very sharp and true.

The third and as yet unnamed model (due for release in 2 weeks) has taken both of the above characteristics and then enhances the Bass tone around where hammered coins come in on the Explorer/Etrac, this bass tone cannot be confused as it is in essence distorting itself thus standing out from all the clear tones around it. They also have a noise limiter to stop loud tones from machines such as Tesoro.

After saying all this, I refer back to a previous post were I pointed out that Headphones are in the end, subjective. So if possible try before you buy, you are going to be wearing them for hours so comfort is paramount.

One more point is the believe that Minelab and XP are fussy with the Ohm rating of the speakers used, this is totaly not true. yes their is an accepted "best" ohm rating for each and every machine and if their audio circuits were made by Sony, Rowland or bang and olefsen then you would notice the difference but the audio side of all comercial detectors are, to be truthful, pretty poor. and the quality of the tones is what is important. so as I have said try before you buy.
