an interesting find by a fellow club member, it reminds me a spade guinea reverse.

any idea what it actually is?

date below shield says 1788

It looks to me more like some sort of weight (maybe coin), as the writing is the wrong way around for a seal or a coin die i.e. it should be reversed.

Yep my initial thought was a forgers die (Like Casa Dos found)  but as Chef said the writing should be reversed for that.

what you can see in the photo is the 1 inch long stem thats on the back of the 'die' -- hence my comment as to a possible seal.

Could it be a master mould which when making others would reverse the lettering as suggested?
