Out earlier in the week with my cousin detecting in Herefordshire, on one of the fields that his family own which just seems to keep giving with respect to finds!  In the space of about 3 hours we found various buttons - including a Tombac button in really good condition.  On the coin front we found 6 which included two £1 and one 50p coin and the best find of the day a George III shilling from 1817.  Now any finds of note we classify ourselves as 'treasure' and share out equally.  On this occasion we had forgotten whose turn was next, my cousin called 'tails'..and won the prize - was I gutted - not really as that day's coin linked me straight back to the occasion when my Dad and myself found an 1817 shilling when detecting almost 35 years ago!  For me, as with many detectorists, the thought 'who was the last person to hold this coin/artefact' is very much to the fore and part of the overall experience of our hobby but to share the moment with someone else, rather than making finds alone, also makes it that little more special for me!

I know what you mean Howie. Thats the nice thing about detecting. You never know whats going to come up. Even bits of old Iron can be interesting (sometimes).
The thing I always think, as well, is how much that coin would have meant to someone if you consider the cost of living back then. Even a Half Penny was probably the cost of a loaf of bread.
