Hello again,

Been out again and found a 2007 coin (what country please) an octagonal button I think and some other buttons with writing on, probably modern but hey I am trying. Also found a 1909 halfpenny and a coin that is smooth both sides, looks old and is thing (no photo as no detial)

Thanks in advance folks

Buttons are one of the items you will find most of. There are many different types and sizes. Often the gilding will be entirely gone off the front but there will still be some on the reverse. The reverse often bore the name of the maker and their address. Trouser buttons and glove buttons often have on them the name of the maker and the place they originated from. It is interesting to see how far away they have travelled.

There are quite a few button books to help with id. Two very good ones are 'Identifying Buttons' by Alan and Gillian Meredith and Michael J. Cuddeford and 'Metal Buttons c.900 BC - c.AD 1700' by Brian Read. I am not sure if the former is still in print but it was a Mount Publications book. The latter is also well recommended for the earlier buttons that you may find. You will find the details for this one advertised in the Searcher.
