I don't know anybody who is brave enough to id pottery sherds from photographs or without knowing the exact location for known styles, clays etc but for what it's worth (which isn't much Grin) the texture, inclusions and oxidised surface are very similar to 12th/13th century ceramic found in Hereford itself, type A3 Wink

As Geoff said, you have to be daring to ID pottery shards but I did look at it and think the bigger piece was very similar to some 14th cent. shards I found.
Certainly dates a site when there aren't any coins around.

Yes Val I agree, this site is a poser for sure, as its next to a church on a possible Celtic site. (the church has a circular church yard on a promontory), Less than 30m from the ditch is a the remains of a moated manor house, the only metal ware found is all late 18thC onwards, as is 98% of the pottery apart from these and a couple of very small pieces of late green glaze.

The Archies were in one of my fields earlier this year.  It was well known that there was a Templar Farm under a Norman Mott and a ditch around the Mott.  But what took them by surprise (I don't know why) when building work started another ditch was found. This one was suspected to be Iron Age.

Just proves that there's more under our feet than we sometimes suspect.
