I think it's RIC 279

"Constantine I AE Follis. 312-313 AD. IMP CONSTANTINVS P AVG, laureate, cuirassed bust right / SOLI INV-IC-TO COMITI and SOLI INV-I-CTO COMITI, Sol standing left, chlamys draped over left shoulder, holding globe upwards and raising right hand. Star in left field. Mintmark PLN. RIC VI London 279 var (obv. legend with P AVG)."

Like you I thought it was a 279 but the thumbnails don't have the 'C' in the correct place in the CTO or IC variants.

Well spotted 284 has the C in the right place but not the right cloak Undecided I think it's just a "version of" having a similar date but Probono will hopefully see this and know Wink
Nice find by the way...

According to my notes this coin is very much like this one: Durrington hoard I, 459; RIC VI London 282 var (rev break). Rated "R"!

Well researched, thank you.  With your information I've found it here, WRB 8454

Hi Rob, Just to clear a few things up, if you take a look at my post "According to my notes this coin is very much like this one: Durrington hoard I, 459; RIC VI London 282 var (rev break). Rated "R"!", you will see written after 282 is the abreviation "var" which means variety, so your coin is a variety of RIC VI London 282, so there may be lots of 282 coins out there, but yours is a variety, hope that makes sense.

Again, according to the notes I have, there are only four types of Constantine I coins with the reverse legend reading "SOLIINVI-C-TOCOMITI" - the "C" being on its own, that match the obverse legend reading "IMP CONSTANTINVS P AVG". Two of the four coins have S and F in the left and right fields on the reverse, leaving it down to the other two which have the STAR in the left field. Out of these two noted, one has SOL facing right, and one facing left, yours to me looks like its facing left, the latter rated "R" meaning its rare (your coin), and the former is rated scarce!

Cheers, Jon.

I haven't looked at the coins of this type I have yet - I don't usually go as far as collecting types that have different legend breaks - it's not particularly clear in Sear RCV Vol IV - just says RIC 279-282. (Sear 16049) - the one shown has 'IC' where as this one almost certainly is just 'C' - as you say.

Don't use Gillis' prices as more than a guide - I used to buy from him (he's a nice enough chap and I've had some good stuff from him over the years), but there are coins he has had listed for at least a decade........

I also find rarities harder to pin down in roman coins that for some other series - what was rare 10 years ago, might be relatively common now - for instance I've seen quite a few Martinian follis at various auctions at the moment (I even owned one for a while), but there are other things I have never seen that are meant to be 'common'.

It is however a nice coin - and a great find Smiley
