Yes, i'd got as far as the freemasons too, so it must be correct, though as you say how can the mason end up owning a common?
Anyway i thought i'd go with one leg tucked in my boot, the other out, they might think i was one of them! Smiley
Its a shame they wouldn't be prepared to enter into negotiations at club level to let responsible detectorists Wink on there.
Perhaps they wont becuase the fact they are involved is a bit fishy to say the least!

I think they Banned it when Metal detectors first came in over 30 years ago,
yes, it maybe a good idea if i write to them asking if a few of us from the club can go there,   i doubt it though,  a lot takes the view if they see someone on there detecting they think they can do it as well,
o.k.  the history of it then,  iv'e found this informative Link

i've been looking up the definition of "freemasons" and "freemen"...according to the freemasons they are not the same.....freemasonry is a secret society...freemen are as described in the article alan posted, ie.rights given by the crown or crown representatives...so....if you are going to look for permission, it could prove very difficult to contact the correct owners......byron

THE PEOPLE OF LLANTRISANT WERE GRANTED BY THE BLACK PRINCE THE FREEMAN SHIP OF LLANTRISANT.THIS MEANS THEY WERE GIVEN GRAZING RITES FOR THE COMMON.AND I ASSUME FOR OTHER USES TO.
THE BLACK PRINCE GAVE THESE RITES TO THE FREEMAN OF LLANTRISANT FOR THERE PROWES WITH THE LONGBOW,THEY WERE FAMOUSE IN HELPING HIM WIN MANY BATTLES.SO AS A REWARD HE GAVE HIS WELSH BOWMAN FREE GRAZING FOR THE COMMON.AND STILL THE LAW STANDS TODAY...
SUPRISED THE BOYS WERE ALLOWED TO DETECT UPTIL NOW.WE TRIED IT IN THE 7OS BUT WERE WARNED OFF...NOTHIN TO DO WITH THE FREEMASONS...GWIL.
