out of curiosity

Hi,

With the on set of rain and wintery conditions though making soil ideal for detecting,

I prefer these days for dry and sunny outtings, use these wet cold days to take stock of finds etc.

So i am curious as to how other members on this forum log / record their own finds ?

I started a data base of photo's etc with find spot info etc, but it does take a lot of time, and already my shelves are full of stuff waiting to record.

I can appreciate now the time it takes on occasions Mark Lodwick, with finds he records.
So how do you do it if at all ?  And do you prioritize finds and not bother with buttons and buckles etc ?

Very simular to my own, except mine only displays a photo if you place the mouse over the word !

I did try to keep a data base record of my finds,but when you try to record all your finds you then have the problem of multiple finds of the same type,and even with the photo attached it becomes very difficult to tell which item is which,i even tried to number the same type of finds to record them,but when you have 50 or more all allmost the same such as buttons or musket balls it does get difficult.So i think the best way is to stick to the better finds and be selective in recording.

I think the bottom line is to be selective. As said previously there are so many buttons and simular finds, i for instance am bogged down with general finds, so that
now, i tend to record the choice finds only.

My wife says that my memory sucks, but when i enter a field that i have detected on before i can remember what i have found in the field, and this is as much as i care to do now, i used to record every button, coin and musket ball etc in my books, but now i have plastic storage boxes which are labelled, i.e.  lead artefacts, coins, and artefacts, i also have a big tub for scrap lead, and obviously the nicer coins and artefacts stay in the house in special cases or boxes.
When you have 3 young children you don't have as much time to dedicate to recording finds.
Obviously every find is recorded with the finds liason officer.

I dont generally record my better finds,
I research them on line when i get home and thats about it
But i guess after my days people are going to go through my things and think, what the hell is that and throw them away.
So i think i,ll add recording my better finds to my every lengthening to do list lol

I think that although its a personal decision as to what is recorded other than pas antiquities, some record of what we find on digs should be made.

A cluster of musket balls in an area of a field, fuels the imagination !

I was advised by the local curator of museum, its not important to photo every find, but to at least write it down find spot grid reference and allocate to an address.

Although i agree with most views, its very time consuming.

One day you might be reading through your past record and see an area that is a cluster of finds and decide to go back, gps references make it so easy now
