Eddy for ID

Hi Peter.
This is the Eddy penny I found last week while out with Taff and Ray. I know it's an Eddy but I give up on which one or class. not helped by it being clipped.

Peter i know this is asking a lot but when you give the I.D. on this one can you please explain why its an Eddy 1 , 2, or 3 and what gives moneyer and mint away ( i think its london but thats all i got, and thats prob wrong).
Eddy's are a stumbling block for me im afraid.

I believe your coin is a London penny of Edward I, and I think it is Class 4b.

So, to go through the stages for this coin:

1. the legend on the reverse (long cross)  side is CIVITAS LONDON, so it is London mint. This isn't very helpful so far.

2. The head side reads EDWR' ANGL' DNS HYB. The EDW indicates it is an Edward, and the legend starting EDWR indicates in a penny-size coin that it is Edward I, and somewhere between Class 1d and 9c. If it starts EDWAR than it could be late Edward I, Edward II, Edward III or Edward IV, so that's not so helpful.

3. The head just has a collar and no shoulders. In a penny-sized coin this means it is Edward I, Edward II or the first coinage of Edward III.

4. The "S" in the legends is a type called "egg-waisted", with a thick middle. These occur in Edward I Classes 3f to 8a.

5. The Cs and Es are open, indicating Classes 1 to 5.

This coin therefore is somewhere between Class 3f and Class 5. To ID it further you have to look at the shape of the crown and the shape of the contraction marks (the apostrophes after EDWR and ANGL). The combination in this coin indicates Class 4b.
