HI ALL.
went out detecting today to try a new farm out i have recently picked up..i decieded to take nobby with me as a guest.lol.arranged to meet the farmer bright and early for him to show me what fields where his..after haveing a chat with the farmer me and nobby set off to have a look at the land.as it seemed to be a few acres.after wondering about the farm.we then seen a field that looked just right to start the day in..but there was a farm house next to the field we picked.not being sure if it was the same farmers land.i said to nobby id better knock the door and find out rather than take a chance..i spoke to the wife and asked her was it her land or not..happened to be it was her land.
i told her we had permission off the farmer next to her..and i was just checking to see if it was one of our fields.she said its not a problem if you.d like to do some metal detecting on my land..so we took her up on the offer.parked up and off we went..into a little paddock.you could see the field had.nt been touched for many years.there where three trams in the field as the was an old tram-line near bye..we started detecting and coins started comeing up straight away.bits of led.copper.buckles and so on.
it was a great start to the day on new land.then i found a bronze coin that looked like a hammered coin..me and nobby looked at the coin confused.lol.it cant be a hammered i said to nobby.its not silver..is it possible to be a fake.but through the day i had three of them..i am still cleaning these coins up at the moment but will put the shots up as soon as ive cleaned them.for pete to id them.
so we carried on detecting.about half-hour later i said to nobby.i just found a hoard of vicky.s lol.3 in one hole.about 20 mins after that nobby came walking over to me with a great big grin.lol.telling me that he.d found a hoard.12 george 2nd coins in one hole.wwwaaawww.welldone fella i said to him.
about 5 mins after nobby.s hoard.i found a silver medal of some sort..something to do with tug-a-war..on the back its hallmarked.and it says.
PRESENTED BY MAJOR J.G.GASKELL..any info would be greatfull.on the hallmarks theres a ..ANCHOR..LION..AND THE LETTER C..on the other hallmark is the letter..R .but i cant quite make the other letter out.if anyone could tell me more about the hallmark stamps.i would be more than greatfull..i have.nt a clue when it comes to hallmarks.but well pleased with the find.
but overall a great start to a new farm..and great company to go with it..welldone on the hoard nobby ..great day out mucker.
cheers all.

Well done both, it sounds as if you had a great day. The medal looks as if it dates from 1902.
Ray you are scaring me when you say you are "cleaning" them up Shocked.  they sound interesting.

A great day Ray. Looking forward to seeing the coins. I agree with Geoff - looks like 1902 Birmingham mark. The registered number on the back equates to 1904-05.

my hoard of 10 gerorge II, albeit a bit worse for wear (they have been in the ground almost 300 years Grin) half pennies... a strange lead artifact and small crown with a threaded base, my guess it would have adorned the top of a lavish spoon.

Unusual hoard to find Nobby - as they are all the same reign it gives you your earliest start date on the land at least

Neil.
